Passion in the workplace, is that even possible? Yes, and I’m not referring to an affair with a coworker or sleeping your way to the top. I’m talking about discovering what you want to do on the job that will make you want to be at work.

I discovered my niche almost by accident. I say almost because at some level I believe there are no accidents and everything happens for a reason. My life went through a series of what seemed like cataclysmic changes and I found myself unemployed and attending a government sponsored training program. It was there that I was exposed to what would become a passion for me - facilitating classes for adults. Now, the changing careers didn’t come without sacrifices. When I made the change from my previous career to facilitating, I now earned about one third of what I used to take home but I was three times happier. Work was no longer work. It had become a pleasure. There were even times when my weekends were irritants because they kept me away from what I loved doing.

Before you race out and become a facilitator of classes and workshops understand that it isn’t any specific job or occupation that creates this unheard of kind of bliss. I talked with a dentist who told me that he looks forward to coming into his practice on Mondays because he loves what he does. A meat cutter told me that he enjoys what he does so much that the day just melts away and before he knows it, it is time to go home.

Identifying what motivates you, what gets your juices flowing is key to knowing what intrinsic needs you have that have to be fulfilled in order for you to experience true job satisfaction. For me it was things like the constant learning of new skills, making a difference in people’s lives and meeting lots of interesting people. For you it could be creating something new and exciting, building something that adds value or beauty to someone’s life or being recognized for making a contribution. Whatever your needs are, and remember they are your needs and not someone else’s, it is important that they get met. I have had people tell me that their main motivator is money and lots of it. I feel sorry for these people because if acquiring money is their main goal, they are never going to be happy. When you chase money you find out there is never enough of it. How many millionaires long to be billionaires? Should money be one of your motivators? I think so. Unless you have figured out a way of living for free. Humor in Advertising
Many of the most memorable ad campaigns around tend to be funny. Advertisers use this strategy to attract customers to their product. Audiences like to be entertained, but not pitched. People will pay more attention to a humorous commercial than a factual or serious one, opening themselves up to be influenced. The key to funny advertising is assuring the humor is appropriate to both product and customer. The balance between funny and obnoxious can often be delicate; and a marketer must
ring money is their main goal, they are never going to be happy. When you chase money you find out there is never enough of it. How many millionaires long to be billionaires? Should money be one of your motivators? I think so. Unless you have figured out a way of living for free. For those of you who have gone home to live with your parents, just try and convince me there isn’t a price for doing that. There is a simple system for identifying what your intrinsic needs are. Take out a piece of paper and draw a circle in the middle. Sticking out from the circle are ten spokes or lines. In the center of the circle write the name of the occupation or career that you’re considering. On each of the lines write down what you will get from it.

Let’s imagine that I’ve placed the occupation of accountant in the center of my circle. Being an accountant would give me 1) money 2) fame 3) groupies. Okay, I guess it’s pretty clear I don’t know much about what being an accountant is about. By the way, that’s about all I could think of in the way of reasons for me to be an accountant. Is being an accountant a good occupation? Absolutely, but not for me. When I did this exercise using the occupation of writer or facilitator, I can fill all ten spokes. When you do this exercise, the key is being able to fill in as many lines as possible with what you will get from it. Anything over eight lines is a good indicator of a good career for you. Anything under five was probably somebody else’s suggestion and should raise some real concerns as to whether it is a smart choice for you. Have some fun with the exercise. Keep trying different careers until you find three that has lots of rewards for you.
