There is one simple thing we all can do to save money. A few months ago I was checking over my phone bill and discovered that I had been charged for $3.99 monthly over a period of about 6 months. The charge was for International Call Plan, which I never signed up for. I do not call overseas, therfore I do not need that plan. I cannot remember now how much if any credit I was given.This month I decided to go on line and pay my phone bill as I do many of my bills. And I clicked on the link that led me to My Services. I was being charged for DSL and Dial-Up. Anyone knows if you have DSL you do not need Dial-Up service. The monthly fee was $9.95. So I called SBC/ATT and spoke to someone in customer service. Ideas, which certainly issue forth from the human mind, are the true riches that could take any person (or nation) from poverty to prosperity. Have you heard the story of the man who spent a life time in poverty searching for riches out there, only to find, on his death bed, that his house was sitting on top of a rich gold mine? If you think this man’s case is pathetic, then think again of any man who in his twilight years discovers the great riches, (far more plentiful than any gold mine) that reside in his mind -- the storehouse that fills your cup to overflowing when you harness is properly.
Inside every person are multiple oil wells and gold mines as richly exemplified by the great discovery and magnificent contribution to science and hence wealth and prosperity by Philip Emeagwali (Africa’s Bill Gates) himself.
I have for long cherished a quote I borrowed from the Courier Magazine to the effect that, the greatest resource of any nation is contained in the brains of her citizens, their ingenuity resourcefulness and hard productive work.
I have since read tons of volumes which all attest to this same truth which has just been refreshed in my mind by Emeagwali’s great speech. He says “The potential for progress and poverty alleviation … relies on capital generated from the power within our minds, not from our ability to pick minerals from the ground or seek debt relief and foreign assistance”.
Many people think that only money could create prosperity, but experts have for long disputed this notion; prosperity and all riches are the result of the crystallization of ideas into concrete form.
Take care of your mind and nurture its development as your greatest resource, your gold mine and oil well, and you will never be without riches. The control of the mind and directing of it toward the achievement of worthwhile goals is the little known secret that is responsible for the difference between poverty and prosperity.

Ideas are the fruits of the great and often neglected garden of the human mind. Yet the oldest of admonitions is, “man know thy self”!
A clear case of one man who harnessed the resources of his mind and created riches is Nigerian-born Kase Lawal who came to the United States as a student and having completed his studies went into business growing his CAMAC Holdings from humble beginnings into an oil industry giant. His company, reports Ebony Magazine, “raked in a mind boggling $1 billion in 2005 alone”. Kase Lawal’s advice to young people is to go out there and be courageous. You should not let the lack of money hinder your progress. Teaching youths to learn from his personal experience, Kase advises that you should have the courage “to go out there meet with people to tell people what you want to do, what you are trying to do and what you can do.”
Out-of-the-box thinking
Philip Emeagwali did mention in his speech, that he used out-of-the box-thinking to create his most outstanding contribution to the sphere of knowledge; a great feat that earned him the enviable accolade of being “A Father of the Internet”. This same kind of thinking could be used to solve your personal problems, and national socio-economic and political problems currently besetting the world. Do not just think of things as they are, but rather use your imagination to perceive things as they COULD/MIGHT be.
The mind was made to soar; you should not confine your thinking to established norms and trends only. If Galileo and Newton shackled their minds to then-conventional thinking, the world would not have made such giant strides as we all proudly cherish in our modern civilization today. If Emeagwali and his contemporaries did not get “out of the box” you would not have been reading this article because there would have been no such thing as the internet!
Free your mind of its fetters and let it soar as it was designed to be, be receptive to flashes of inspiration and hunches and strengthen your thoughts and efforts with faith; this is the key to success in any field!
