How to Effectively Use Job Boards to Solicit Work So, how do I use job boards to solicit work? In two ways: 1) I always apply -- I don't care how old the listing is, I will still send in my credentials. Most of the time, if I receive a response, it will be something along the lines of, "We received 100 responses to our ad and have already chosen a freelancer. Thanks for applying." In two ways:If you are anything like me, your website is a reflection of yourself. It contains your thoughts and communications, exposed to the entire world at all times. Look at virtually any non-commercial web site and you will get a glimpse at the person behind the monitor.I look at web sites all day long, and I am constantly amazed by the things that people reveal about themselves without saying anything. Is the website well organized or just a jumble of images and text thrown up at a moments notice? Is the site alive with color or just dull and lifeless black and white? Is the site exploding at the seams with content or is it just a collection of ads, banners or links? All of these and many other clues tell 1) I always apply -- I don't care how old the listing is, I will still send in my credentials. During a face-to-face meeting, you have visual cues and body language available to add layers of meaning. On the telephone, you have only your voice and the words that you use. The way that you use your voice can make or break your conversation. Imagine that you are telling a bedtime story to a child. You would not drone on in a bored tone about the “Big, Bad Wolf.” No! You would put fear and passion into your voice to have that story come alive for that child. On an introductory call, you are telling your story to your prospect. As a former founder of a franchising company, I had to know everything about my industry and all the sub-sectors we competed in. I had to know all my competitors and their ancillary markets they competed in.I had to understand their customers and my customers. How they bundled products and services and how they marketed their wares. I had to know every possible pitfall and every potential risk.Today, entrepreneurs simply do not get it. In fact as the founder of an Online Think Tank, I am often amazed at the lack of knowledge that they have. This way, I know which companies use freelancers. When I do mailings, cold calls, etc., I never have to pay for a list -- I just go to the one I've been building for years. I have over 4,000 listings in this database. I haven't done a direct mailing to the whole thing in years. What I do do on a consistent basis is send an e-mail blast 4-6 times a year. It contains marketing tips for increasing referrals rates; info on turning passive customers into paying customers; highlights technology that makes marketing easier, etc. I send a marketing newsletter because my customer base has changed over the years and I haven't taken the time to sort it according to industry. So, I can't, for example send a newsletter about the mortgage industry because some of my clients are legal publishers, some are educational firms, others are graphic design firms, etc. A marketing newsletter appeals to all prospects b
