October 19, 2006, the Greek Parliament passed Law 3500/2006 on the Combating Intra-family Violence, under which corporal punishment of children within the family is prohibited. Article 4 of the law states:
“Physical violence against children as a disciplinary measure in the context of their upbringing brings the consequences of Article 1532 of the Civil Code.”
The prohibition brings the number of states in Europe to 15 (16 worldwide) which have enacted legislation explicitly prohibiting all corporal punishment of children, including in the home setting.
The states include: Sweden (1979), Finland (1983), Norway (1987), Austria (1989), Cyprus (1994), Denmark (1997), Latvia (1998), Croatia (1999), Bulgaria (2000), Germany (2000), Iceland (2003), Romania (2004), Ukraine (2004) and Hungary (2005).
