The media defense for its actions is that the government can’t be trusted and a free press is obliged to keep the public informed. I don’t dispute that. On the other hand, can the media be trusted any more than the government? Do some of our most influential news sources have agendas of their own that don’t necessarily take the necessity for winning this war into account? By allowing the media to make key decisions regarding what the people, and our enemies, should know, are we jumping from the frying pan into the fire? I have questions I’d like to ask the editors of the publications involved. But since I’m not in a realistic position to get an interview with them, I’ve decided to do a mock telephone interview. My questions and the responses to them are based on my understanding of the situation from current and past articles, reports and analysis of the media’s performance.

File Formats: How to Choose the Right One
During the course of a day I send and receive an average of 32.4 files. I know because I decided to count them for ten days. On one day, I sent a compressed batch of files to a printer in New York and a PDF to a printer in Seattle, 3 files to each of 4 magazines publishing a client’s ad (and since there are no magazine standards in this country, each needed the files in different sizes and different formats). I downloaded a font from House Industries, a photo from Getty Images and a little movie of my little niece from Washington, D.C. The media function is to keep an eye on what the government is doing, and to inform the public of things they should be aware of and that our elected officials are failing to disclose. In other words, we’re protecting the public from the government running amok.

ME: I see your point. I agree that it would be foolish for the people to blindly accept whatever the government says unchallenged. But aren’t there checks and balances built into our system of government? Don’t the various branches keep tabs on each other?

Editor: Certainly that’s the way it should work, but I don’t think we can rely entirely on the government to police itself. I believe it is the responsibility of a free press to watch the watchdog. The people have a right to know what their government is up to and I intend to make sure they do.

ME: You’re saying the government can’t necessarily be trusted and I don’t argue that point. I concur that there is a need for oversight, but that’s where I have a problem. Who’s watching those who are watching the watchdog?

Editor: What in the world are you talking about?

ME: Well, it seems to me that if our elected officials are incompetent or worse… treasonous, for example…there are mechanisms in place to deal with them.
