Five years after terrorist attacks we have no port security, no border security, and no real security in our homeland. The very people we claim to be fighting overseas, we let into the country through immigration, both legal and illegal. There is actually a community near Detroit that has so many Muslim residents that the noise abatement laws had to be changed to allow for the Islamic call to prayer five times a day to be broadcast over loudspeakers in the city. < Sarasota Housing Market: Capture the Right Price in a Decelerating Market What could be more frightening than a national pandemic associated with bird flu? The increase of government power, to regiment and regulate the lives of all who are within its sphere of influence, that is what is more frightening. The invasive outreach of the many tentacles of an expansive central government is a grave threat. Right now, bird flu is not.Reports across Sarasota and around the country indicate that the housing market is no longer increasing in value at the rates benefited from the past few years. As a matter of fact, the National Association of Realtors or NAR describes that the nationwide existing home prices in August 2006 were actually less by about 1.7 percent from a year earlier. Unless you bought a home in Sarasota last year and is now intending to sell this year, none of the signs of a decelerating housing market spells trouble. Those who have owned for a few years are well ahead in most communities. Consider that When the federal government is growing at the speed of light, we have a political supernova. Homeland security, the war on terror, preparing for the worst, securing our borders, protecting all Americans, spreading democracy, rebuilding the Middle East, are all catch phrases of an administration that is determined to seize more power by creating anxiety and irrational fear. Take the case of bird flu. The H5N1 virus or Avian Influenza cannot be transmitted by interpersonal contact. To date, fewer than one hundred people, out of a world population of six billion, have died from bird flu. The conditions under which they contracted it are very difficult to duplicate and there is no evidence that the virus can pass from one human to another. With this in mind, the Bush administration and the UN are prepared to spend billions to prepare for the worst. Do you remember SARS? Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome was another great scare. Fewer than eight hundred people died worldwide. To put that in perspective, 55 million people die every year, a couple million of them in the United States. Another pandemic year was 1968, 34,000 Americans died of flu that year, but that is the number of flu related deaths each year. Think about this, each year more than two million die from malaria. You hardly hear a world about it. Maybe birds are more interesting than mosquitoes. Imagine Alfred Hitchcock doing a film called, The Mosquitoes. Another statistic that goes unreported for the most part is the one hundred thousand people who die each year in the United States from the side effects of prescription medicine. It just is not the sort of crisis the central government can get its teeth into. The pharmaceutical companies are very well represented on Wall Street and in Congress. How about the phony war on terror? Billions of dollars are being spent every month by a government which must first of all, take the money from us to use in the first place. What do they do with it? They send our military all over the world to fight in battles with enemies who do not even wear uniforms and in countries that are surrounded by our other enemies. There is actually a community near Detroit that has so many Muslim residents that the noise abatement laws had to be changed to allow for the Islamic call to prayer five times a day to be broadcast over loudspeakers in the city. What is my point in all of this? To answer that question I must return to my premise. Big government is bad. It is bad for our country and bad for us. It is a cancer which grows and spreads by destroying everything in its way. It is destructive and can be fatal. H.L. Mencken once observed that the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed and hence clamorous to be led to safety, by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary. The current hobgoblin is Osama Bin Laden. He is the boogeyman of today. We have had countless opportunities to capture or kill him with spy satellites and high tech drones. He really should be not that difficult to find. You have to wonder if he is not more valuable to our government as an evil phantom, always just one step ahead of us, and alive. As long as Bin Laden is free, the supernova of expanding federal power can ask for more money, and for what is even worse, to be elected again. The boogeyman Osama reminds us of the ultimate boogeyman described by Charles Dickens in his most famous work, A Christmas Carol, written in 1843. Old Scrooge, when confronted by the last of the spirits, The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, refers to him as Spectre. He was more afraid of this visitor than the others, for this one represented grave danger. We too should be deeply concerned in the face of grave danger. In our time we need not fear the phantom in the churchyard or the rodent living in the caves of Pakistan. We should, be sobered by the encroachment of government which is out of control. Such a power will eventually rob us of all our freedoms and all our money. In the end, the supernova explosion will leave only debris where there once was a glorious free Republic and a people that believed in limited federal power together with more individual responsibility.
