Personally, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry after hearing his remark. If we thought defeating the Islamic fanatics was going to be tough before Khatami’s interview, we must now view our chances as closer to slim and none. Bad enough these jokers put such little value on their and other’s lives that they would sacrifice them for the promise of vestal virgins. Monday is the 5th Anniversary of the September 11th tragedy that changed the course of America, maybe, forever.

After we got our collective senses together, President George W. Bush, first tried to get the Taliban, who ruled Afghanistan at the time, to turn over Osama Bin Laden and his band of jihadists. Bin Laden and his thugs were operating from Afghanistan, and had blatantly claimed responsibility for the events of that day.

When negotiations and patience produced no results, President Bush unleashed his military arsenal, and bombed the Taliban and Osama bin Laden back to the stone age they had come from.

Well, at least that’s the story we’ve been told. The truth of the matter was delivered to us by none other than the past “reformist” President of Iran Mohammad Khatami in an interview this past week on CNN.

When asked about President Bush’s claim that Iran supported the Taliban, and promoted terrorists in general, President’s Khatami’s reply was so shocking as to cause the CNN interviewer to become speechless.

Of course, he denied Iran had any connection to terrorist of any kind. And then, in the same breath, and with a straight face, announced that it was Iran and not America that had rid Afghanistan of the Taliban.

Anything of value that he might have said after that comment was lost, I’m sure, in the fog of disbelief CNN’s viewing audience must have been experiencing.

Life lately has been a game of smoke and mirrors, both domestically and internationally, but could such a pronouncement possibly be true? Had the magic of television so distorted our view of history that we actually thought we had liberated the Afghans, when in reality it had been the Iranian’s that had come to their rescue?

Did the sun not rise in the east any more? Did rainbows not follow the rain? What manner of delusional drug had been put in our water that we actually believed we had even been in Afghanistan, much less sent the Taliban packing across it rugged borders.

Well, the interviewer never really recovered after unearthing that piece of news, and the rest of the interview was a blur.
