My friend was looking for a technology or two in information management. However, I found myself going off in a variety of directions, even though I am not so afflicted as to have teenagers yet. I’ll try to recreate, and reduce, my diatribe here…1. What the teenager brings natural talent and interest to. This must be overriding guidance for any of the subsequent directions. There’s nothing wrong with pushing and refining towards a direction that is interesting, but success is personal. Creating the best tailored life for oneself, balancing numerous personal factors, must take precedent. Not exploring all options. It is human nature to want to think about the problem quickly, make a decision (instead of looking for the best decision) as soon as possible and move on.There are many tools available to assist in thinking creatively to ensure all possible options are canvassed PRIOR to the decision being made. For Example: If a decision is to be made regarding the company's business systems, close study would need to be given to ensure all feasible software providers were involved. Not only would you need to look at software providers but also hardware sou The point of the CEO’s problem was clearly illustrated in the first thirty minutes of our first meeting. The leveraging of blogs for the PR department and executive suite should be reconsidered and instead, the value of empowering your hundreds or thousands of brand ambassadors to speak their minds and hearts about their lives and your work should be evaluated. But what if they share all your secrets? Tell your customers how they really aren’t respected? What about controlling the message?Your company culture will be a big determinant here: if your culture is closed and secretive, this will never work. That’s where the object of my extreme misery stood. It had been hours since I noticed that we had no hot water. So, here I was, standing on the cold, concrete floor staring at the large, white cylinder formerly filled with hot water. Something was obviously wrong, but what. I could hear the wind whistling outside on this cold, February night. But I had to go on, because we needed that hot water. I had exhausted all other possibilities. Just an hour ago, in desperation, I had picked up the Yellow Pages, searching and seeking out a plumber. But all the ads looked alike. They were a sea of black and yellow and color-filled words screaming their clichés at me, as if to add a note of stress and frustration to an already gloomy situation.“Quality, Low-Cost, Reliable,” they declared. That first executive coaching meeting was held in his spacious, modern office in a corner on the top floor of the company’s corporate headquarters. In those first thirty minutes my notes also said, “CEO seems unusually bothered by, ring, ding, knock and slap.” Within the first couple of minutes of our first meeting his phone rang. Even though he had a highly competent administrative assistant just outside the door, he leaped up and answered the phone. After a brief conversation he said, “Sorry about that, I like to get my own calls.” A few minutes later I heard a “ding” from the computer on the CEO’s desk. The ding signaled that an email had been received. Instantly the CEO began glancing toward the computer. He appeared to have difficulty focusing on our conversation, as evidenced by his glances at the computer. Finally, he said, “Excuse me I need to see if this is something I need to take care of.” He then moved to his desk and after pushing a couple of keys read an email. Coming back to the conference table where I was seated he said,
