There is a duality inherent to our existence. There is the outer self, the functional, practical self; this is the self that drives the car on the way to work. In addition to this there is the inner self, the creative, imaginative self, this is the self that daydreams and wonders and plays with ideas as the outer self changes lanes or makes a three point turn. There is the part of you that is reading these words right now, the part of you that has learned to translate the abstract symbols of letters and language into meaningful ideas, and there is the part of you that takes these ideas and forms pictures in your mind, creates new worlds for these ideas to exist within.

Psychologists refer to these two selves as the conscious and sub-conscious mind. From a psychological viewpoint the conscious mind is aware and awake while the subconscious mind is dreaming. I prefer to think of the subconscious as the intuitive mind, and it is anything but inactive and inferior to outer consciousness as some modern psychological theory would have us believe. In fact it is my opinion that the intuitive mind is more responsible for our beliefs and sense of identity as well as learning than the rational or analytical mind.

Consider the task of building a model airplane for example, the conscious or rational mind allows us to comprehend instructions and procedures. But if we were to take away the instructions for the model and were presented only with a box of parts, the intuitive mind might be able to help us assemble a reasonable facsimile of an airplane, even if we have never attempted to build one in the past. The intuitive mind relies on a vast reservoir of information and experiences, it is capable of imagining and creating new ideas and concepts, it even contains information inherited from our ancestors, survival traits ingrained into our awareness since the birth of mankind, perhaps even earlier evolutionary ancestors.
