    If there is one guiding motto in life, it is simplicity. This principle should reign supreme in all areas of life, from language, ideas to business and strategies. Yet, the irony remains that most people are attracted to complexity, thinking that simple efforts run the risk of being ridiculed as being obvious, simplistic or unoriginal. Contrary to what some may think, simplicity is hard to achieve. In fact, Karl von Clausewitz, the famous military historian, once said, “Everything is very simple in war, but the simplest thing is difficult.”In business, the most successful ideas are usually stunningly simple. In fact, simplicity is at the heart of many success stories in business. Management consultants are often guilty of clouding things with technical jargon and complex concepts. There is a tendency among business people to indulge in complicated and high-sounding buzzwords that give the impression of being smart and polished. Jack Welch, the chairman of General Electric, hit the nail on the head when he said, “Insecure managers create complexity. … Real leaders don’t need clutter. People must have the self-confidence to be clear, precise, to be sure that every person in their organization understands what the business is trying to achieve. You can’t believe how hard it is for people to be simple, how much they fear being simple. They worry that if they’re simple, people will think they’re simpleminded.”The tenet that “business is simple” is one of Welch’s fundamental beliefs. After all, “this is not rocket science,” insisted Welch.     Abraham Maslow was born in New York in 1908 to poor, uneducated Russian immigrants. He was the oldest of seven children, and therefore pushed by his parents to succeed in education where they had not. Originally studying to be a lawyer, he found it to be of little interest and eventually shifted over to psychology where he excelled. Maslow went on to receive his PhD in Psychology at the University of Wisconsin, under the tutelage of Harry Harlow, famous for experimentation with rhesus monkeys and attachment behavior. After some time he returned to New York and began studying human sexuality. In addition to this study, during the years of teaching, he had the opportunity to meet many well-respected psychologists which further helped to shape his thoughts on the human needs. The final event which led Maslow to move in the humanistic direction came from the study of the development of the concept of "self-actualization". It was this study that led Maslow to develop his famous Hierarchy of Needs Theory.[1]

    Many residential cleaning companies start out as a one-person operation. But as your cleaning company grows and you add employees you will soon face the problem of whether you should send in a single person to clean a home or if you should send in a team. Some cleaners may prefer to work alone, but is that in the best interest of your cleaning company?A single cleaner does all the tasks and does not have to negotiate with anyone about who will do what task or how things will get done. One person can generally clean two to three houses a day - but they may only be able to clean just one home if it is large and there's a long drive to get to it. Teams will consist of two to four people, who are all cross-trained. Teams can clean from two to seven houses a day, which can triple the number a lone person can clean.No matter if you pay for mileage or if you provide a company car, you will spend more money if you have single cleaners going out on jobs rather than teams. When you use teams they can pair up in a vehicle, cutting down on the cost of mileage to and from each job.What can be a large drawback of using single cleaners is the risk that they can steal from your customers. Also, a single cleaner works directly with a customer and may have opportunities to talk to that customer alone. The customer may approach the cleaner about cutting out the middle person or the cleaner may decide there is more money to be made going at this on her own.There are a couple of ways to get around this. One is to have your employees sign a noncompete agreement. Second, you can send teams of at least two cleaners to each home. In addition, if a single cleaner is out for the day, you may have to reschedule or have someone clean the home who is not familiar with it. In team cleaning there are several individuals who know the home and can cover the tasks of someone who is out for the day.With team cleaning, all members of the team have specific cleaning assignments. There is also a team leader that may have added duties, such as inspecting the work and communicating with the home owner.     Many people desire to move on in their career, tired of going from job to job seeing no advancement, but they do not know how to gain the skills they need to move on. Climbing the career ladder may mean getting career training in order to advance your career and move into management or into a completely new career. Yet knowing what type of career training and where to find good career training can help you on your desire to move on in your career.As you decide to do something different with your career, you need to take a close look at what you would like to do differently. Knowing what you want to do with your career will help you determine what type of career training you will need. For instance, if you are looking at wanting career training to get a promotion, it may take on a very different path than if you want to get career training to get a new job.Once you know what path you would like your career to take, you can then begin to look at what type of career training you will need to take yourself in your new direction. In cases where you are looking for a promotion or a new job in the same field, you may just need to attend some career training classes or symposiums. These types of trainings may only take a day or even just a few weeks. In some cases, you can even complete your training online.However, some promotions and often complete career changes will require significantly more career training. For instance, you may be working in a job that requires a bachelors degree, but you want to change to a job that requires a masters.     In the 1970s, Maslow further split this hierarchy up into a total of eight levels:[2]

    1) Physiological: hunger, thirst, bodily comforts, etc.;

    2) Safety/security: out of danger;

    3) Belonging and Love: affiliate with others, be accepted; and

    4) Esteem: to achieve, be competent, gain approval and recognition.

    5) Cognitive: to know, to understand, and explore; (new)

    6) Aesthetic: symmetry, order, and beauty; (new)

    7) Self-actualization: to find self-fulfillment and realize one's potential; and

    8) Self-transcendence: to connect to something beyond the ego or to help others find self-fulfillment and realize their potential. (new) (This concept is relatively new and many authors such as Dr. Stephen covey express similar views.)[3]

    Another way to look at the Needs is to break it into "D-Needs" (Deficiency) and "B-Needs" (Being). Maslow believed that the deficiency needs, once satisfied ceased to be a driving force for the individual, and they were then free to move upward to developing themselves.

    If we follow the traditional hierarchical form, we can see that each need forms the basis of the next need above it in the pyramid. Without these previous foundations, Maslow believed that it is impossible to move on to the next stage in the hierarchy.[4]
