Answer Upon - How To Delegate for Fun and Profit
What Can American Idol Teach You About Business? raged me. Every once in a while I would loosen my death grip a little and delegate to someone who did a half-assed job. This just reinforced my belief system that I was the only one I could rely on. What I didn’t realize was that by excluding my staff I was slowly diminishinWell, folks, as luck and ratings would have it, it’s time for yet another season of that train wreck of reality TV, American Idol; the show that attempts to separate the talented from the terrible and brings them all into your living room each week for you to enjoy. Get ready to call in and cast your vote for who should be applauded and who should be muzzled. How fortunate we are to be living in a time when we can judge our fellow man via text message. And don’t forget your judges, ladies and gentlemen, the flaky Paula Abdul, the canine-obsessed Randy Jackson (somebody get this guy a dog), and the perpetually nasty, Simon Cowell; who gives new meaning to the term, "I don’t mean this bad, but..."To be honest, I’m not a fan of the show (too much negativity for my blood). The only time I watch it is when my wife screams, "Come here, you’ve got to see this!" And every view Using Your Whine Factor Ah, the wretched pain of delegation. It comes easy to some people. But others – you know who you are – would rather undergo a double root canal than hand over a task and walk away from it.Brian's work was exceptional. Still, as his boss, I rarely offered him additional responsibilities, never thought of promoting him or selecting him for a critical project. Why? His whine factor got in the way. He was quick to complain to anyone who'd listen how much work was on his plate, or how hard or how late he worked. His whine factor was a protective shield that insured he didn't get more work to do. But, it also shielded him from getting the opportunity filled assignments, more interesting work, and the highest pay raises. The good news is that this is a disease you can recover from. And the better news is that when you choose to give up control you benefit along with the delegatee. As with most things in my life this knowledge was hard come by for me. I had just received a huge promotion to a project which was mind-numbingly large. The first day on the job I asked the assistant of the woman I had replaced why he thought she had had difficulty. He said that she had been unable to delegate; had given him virtually nothing to do and had only emerged from under her staggering workload to complain about how overwhelmed she was. This was sobering news for me as this was also my M.O. at the time. I figured I needed to change – and fast. At that time I believed that if I wanted a thing done well I absolutely had to do it myself. Or micromanage it to death. Unfortunately events sometimes proved me right. This only encouraged me. The days of an operator spraying a can of CFC-based mold release are gone. Formerly simple mold release decisions now require more information than ever before.CFCs and now most HCFCs have been banned as Ozone Depleting Substances (ODSs). Substitutes are either a non-ozone-depleting (non-ODS) aerosol or a non-aerosol bulk product. Application can still be manual, or can be by robot or other automated equipment. Each alternative has its positives and negatives.Aerosol Cans and Tanks (Cylinders)Non-ODS aerosols use materials that are either more flammable, more toxic, more aggressive against plastics, more expensive or slower to evaporate than the old formulas. Selecting a formula is a matter of deciding which of those attributes can be tolerated and which cannot. For hand-held cans, most molders determine that fa As with most things in my life this knowledge was hard come by for me. But what happens when you help a youth organization like the Boy Scouts and find that it is not politically correct? What happens when the Gay and Lesbian Community or a fringe within their community threatens to boycott your company? The episode described above happened to my company and it has long past. Believe me I can hold my own, no worries, really good at what I do and very strategic in marketing, but it is troubling to be put in that situation. I was asked once when I mentioned this was: “What is the Gay Fringe is doing to you!”Well they made it sound like I am afraid, worried or some such non-sense, no way. A little pissed off indeed back then, but hardly worried about my company or our Brand Name in the market place, our customers love us, I know it and I am sure I didn’t think I was arrogant. That would have been bad. I thought I was a perfectionist. Which is good, right? Well. Yes and no. I’ve now come around to the idea that perfectionists are not God’s gift to business. Except in their own alternative universe. I didn’t think that I mistrusted other people - only that I had great intuition about them. And I didn’t realize that my constantly telling myself that I was the only one who could be trusted to do a good job was fueling my view of an untrustworthy Universe. It wasn’t the case that I couldn’t trust my staff to do work well. It was the case that I didn’t trust them to do well. My problem – not theirs. Eventually I came to love delegating. I relished the free time it gave me. My staff thrived on the added responsibility and appreciated my faith in them. After a while they were bugging me for more work; asking what else they could do and how could they help me. Here’s how it can work for you. First. Drop the attitude. Your staff knows you’re a con
