Buyer Beware the Extended Warranty – Deal or No Deal
Experience is always life's best teacher. But ideally it is through somebody else's experience that you could learn a valuable lesson about extended warranties. What is the deal with extended warranties? Are they really an insurance against damage or malfunction? A seasoned salesperson knows just when to propose the extended warranty; especially, those electronic store sales representatives. When you are high on the purchase the salesperson poses the question, “ Would you like the extended warranty added to this purchase?”. Now they Do NOT review the extended warranty Terms and Conditions (T's & C's) outlining the things that ARE NOT covered by the extended warranty. In fact, some of them purport (Like Future Shop which is part of the Best Buy chain of stores)

    Label Printing
Organization has been something elusive to many of us for decades. We all constantly lose thing, and wish we had a more organized system of record keeping. Whether it was digging through the attic to find the old Christmas decorations we stuffed into a million different boxes in a rush and panic to get them down before Easter, or organizing all of our financial records so we aren’t nailed to the wall when tax time comes around with Uncle Sam rapping at our doors, we’ve all been there. We’ve all thought to ourselves, “I need to get more organized!” We’ve all made resolutions in the tradition of the New Year to organize our lives and keep them that way. These grandiose projects always start out with the best of intentions and somehow get lost and slip through the cracks, leaving us in the same p

Business Logic; Bad Logic, Poor Business
We see and read fallacies in logic every day. I am sure that there is a chance that even in this august newspaper there has been the odd fallacy in logic which escaped the eagle eyes of the editors. In this very column, I am sure that at times I have made an error in logic even though I pride myself in being logical.Fallacies in logic in a journal or newspaper or a conversation between people creates frustration and perhaps heated discussion. Fallacies in logic in business create a bad business.A simple fallacy that occurs when market research is poorly interpreted is to argue from selected observation. Data from a handful of people is interpreted as being representative of a whole population. This happens frequently when the boss has a pet theory about the market, commissions so

Shelf Company / Shelf Companies Explained
Definition: A shelf company is a company which has been created but has ceased trading. Its memorandum and articles can be bought 'off the shelf'. source: ANZ Bank Financial DictionaryBack in the 'good old days', it took quite a while to create (or incorporate) a company. Yet, people often needed a new company ASAP, so providers of company registration services would pre-create companies and have them 'sitting on the shelf', ready for sale when required.Someone wanting to create a company fast could buy one of these off-the-shelf companies (or shelf companies as they are more commonly termed) quickly and easily. All that was required for a buyer to purchase a shelf company was for the provider to transfer the shelf company's shares to the buyer, a

Corporate Identity - A Rough Guide
A rough guide to corporate identityThe tabloids report the millions spent by large corporate companies on their logos as a scandal... Those small swathes of colour adorning British Airways’ tail fin, ICI’s letterhead or Sainsbury’s checkout seem to come at a huge price. So do these companies have too much money and not enough common sense? Are they victims of designer indulgence, or are they getting a good deal? This isn’t rocket science, but it is often misunderstood, as the tabloids flagrantly show. Let’s start at the beginning. Every company has a corporate image. Every company from Joe’s One-Man Taxi Co. to IBM. It may be good, it might be bad. Put simply, corporate identity is the way in which an organisation is perceived.Corporate identity describes the individu

    Why Should We Hire You?
Sometimes this is the last question of a phone screen or a face-to-face interview. Regardless of when it occurs, and believe me it will, you should be ready to rock and roll with your answer! A great candidate like you should be more than ready to absolutely kill this question with your fluid communication and self-marketing skills. By preparing for this question and relaxing in the interview you will slay this hiring manager dragon. This is outside your control, but I have always found instant success when my candidates are either the first or last to interview. If you are the first you leave an impression that no other candidate can top and if you are the last you will seem like a breath of fresh air compared to the majority of crappy candidates before you by nailing this question.

There is one thing that always holds true for small businesses, and that is change. Therefore, my advice is to pay attention to the latest marketing trends – but to avoid them at all costs whenever possible!

Why? Well, quite simply I have found through experience that the
