I live in Sydney, Australia, and our southern hemisphere seasons are a direct opposite of the northern hemisphere. I tend to enjoy summer a lot. There are aspects of spring and autumn I enjoy too, but I’m not overly keen on winter (unless I go skiing). I’ve never been one to enjoy the cold, getting dark earlier and the general lack of colour I notice about winter.

Just as there are seasons in life, so too there are seasons of the soul. Poet’s have been writing about it for years. Today, I’d like to tie the subject of seasons into understanding persistence.

In life there is a season for sowing and labouring. There’s a preparatory time for everything. Farmers need to prepare the soil before they can plant the seed. Then they need to keep it free of weeds, and nourish it with plenty of water, sunlight and fertiliser.

The night season is the dark night of the soul that poet’s describe. It’s the time that despite your best efforts, you can’t see anything happening. It’s the time when appearances can be deceptive. Often there’s a lot more growth happening beneath the surface that you can’t yet see. A farmer doesn’t dig up his seed daily to see how it’s growing. That would kill it. It’s a time for faith.

In summer things often get a bit easier. It’s a time of maintaining. Now you have some momentum, so you just need to keep doing the basics and things will keep growing.

Autumn is harvest time, (or the pay-off). It’s the time when you start to see the fruits of your labour. Your harvest is directly related to the efforts and actions you’ve taken in the spring and the summer (the establishment and building time). Some factors are sometimes out of your control. But you can improve your odds, by continuing unfazed in doing the basics daily. Daily action will move you toward you goals and desires quite quickly due to the law of cumulative effect and skill improvement through practice.
