Adult ADD wasn't heard of before the 1980s. It was readily assumed that ADD kids outgrew the disease. But that's not true. Though you may never have been properly diagnosed, that doesn't mean that you don't have adult ADD.

Let's cover some of the misconceptions about attention deficit, and you may be able to make some connections:

    1. Hyper people are the only ones with ADD

Not true. Even if you're as calm as an azure sky, you may still have attention deficit in one form or another. Three of the subtypes are inattentive, where the slightest thing may draw your attention away from what you're trying to concentrate on; hyperactive, where you just can't seem to stay still; and a combination of both. Just because a person is fidgety and hyper doesn't necessarily mean that they're ADD or ADHD.

    2. Poor parenting skills are the reason for attention deficit

If you have adult ADD, do you remember how your parents disciplined you as a child? If they were permissive, that still didn't bring on your ADD. If they were strict disciplinarians, it probably didn't do much good anyway. Attention deficit is caused by chemical and physical differences in the brain. No parents can correct that.

    3. Adult ADD is a Myth

If you have adult ADD, you know better. If you had ADD or ADHD as a child, you know that you still have the disorder, though some adults are able to control the symptoms better than others.

    4. Sugar causes attention deficit

Researchers have found no connection between the amount of sugar in your diet to ADD or ADHD.

    5. Attention deficit is an excuse for other problems

This just isn't true. In fact, most people with ADD have always had other issues. With adult ADD, these can turn into addictions or impulsive spending, but mood disorders and learning disabilities have also been associated with attention deficit.
