The Church of St. Philip and St. Jacob was built outside the original walls. It was a chapel of a priory believed to have been Benedictine. During the 12th Century it became a parish church, and was granted to the Abbey of Tewkesbury in 1388.

In 1279, it is recorded for use with the ancient Right of Sanctuary. During the Civil War the church suffered the indignity of being occupied by the Parliamentary Army. In 1643, the Royalists recaptured the city, and large amounts of rosemary were purchased in order to cleanse the building.

Most of the church dates back to the 15th and 16th Century, though the vaulted tower in the south transept is in early English style. The building still has its wagon roof and carved wooden bosses made from oak given by Richard II. In 1880, the churchyard was leveled, and laid out neatly. Before the leveling was done, a plan was made showing the exact position of every grave. A book was also made in which every legible inscription and portion of inscription on tombstones at the time were recorded. More than 100 stones were illegible.

The church tower was oddly topped by the truncated remnant until the 1870’s, when the new spire was constructed. The building was founded in 1292, by Simon De Burton three- time Mayor of Bristol. The Church was actually not completed until 75 years later!

St. Mary Radcliffe contained side- chapels, like many mediaeval churches. For years, St, Mary Radcliffe suffered from smoke pollution caused by the close proximity of the railway, with its coal- yards and the surrounding industrial activity. As a result of cleaning off the grime some years ago, the old church proudly reveals a wealth of carved detail.

Temple was a large church with several charities. It included a weaver’s chapel that contained much painted glass. Dedication of the church was to Holy Cross, but after bombing, it was deconsecrated. The English Heritage now looks after the ruins.

St. Thomas was completed in 1793. However, the original chapel to Bedminster Church on this site, dedicated to Thomas the Martyr, was described as being a large and elegant building as early as 1200.

Historian, Dr. John Evans wrote in the year 1818 states, ‘The architecture of the priest church contains little that will offend a correct taste, though it combines nothing to excite admiration … a specimen of what has been denominated the modern style of ecclesiastical architecture.’

The Perpendicular northwest tower is mostly original. The interior of the church is Georgian. The combination of high barrel vault ceiling and clerestory windows with painted plastered walls contribute to the spaciousness and light of the interior, leading the eye to the richness of the veredos at the altar. The last service was held Christmas of 1982. The Redundant Churches Fund now administers the church.
