    Now the previous installments of this series, we've looked at attitudes and behaviours which we as trainers find unacceptable, this one can be different, and should be treated accordingly. It could be one (or more) of several factors, these being:

    - You are not explaining it well enough

    The first thing you need to do if someone just doesn’t seem to "get it" is check yourself. Are you being clear about it? How is everyone else progressing? Can you change at all to explain it better? This doesn't make you a bad trainer. But you can't explain everything perfectly all the time. Why not try getting another participant in the group to put a different angle on it, this is surprisingly effective. Be careful though because you could confuse the issue even more!

    - They are a specific communicator and need more information than most

    With communications, there are two types of a communicator. Firstly you have a general communicator; these individuals have longer term plans but very little in the way of short term plans. A general communicator will take the information on and assimilate it later. On the other hand, you have a specific communicator; these individuals want to know the ins and outs of everything. But this is rarely the case; it’s just the way they like to communicate. The best way to engage a specific communicator is to be specific yourself, leave no stone unturned. If you don't have time for this, do it in the break

    - They aren't listening

    Sometimes, there is little you can do if someone is not listening. Just work with what you can control and run a blistering session. If they missed a point because they were not listening, offer to explain it again after the session. Don't get into explaining it there and then as that robs time from you and your delegates

    - They need a little extra time to let it sink in

    We have to face that some participants won't have the necessary aptitude to keep up. The key here is to try and spot this early (you can tell by some comments they may make, pre-course conversation, pre-course work) you'll have to make an assumption to begin with but better safe than sorry
