I’ve even witnessed them being placed in the middle of a post. I really hate those for the simple fact I don’t foresee many people clicking away from a page while in the middle of reading great content.

Test a few different placements to find out which position generates the most clicks. After gathering the data make a decision on where you want to place Adsense. I suggest doing this not only with Adsense, but with all your advertisements. You want to locate the position on your page with the highest CTR (Click Through Rate). I tend to charge advertisers the most for that position due to its high CTR.
