A true search engine can search throughout the internet for websites with domains that are registered with the DNS on the World Wide Web, and if the search engine algorithm believes that the web page contains sufficiently unique information relative to s specific keyword, it will be included in its index. It is that index which is searched in a search engine enquiry.

    A web directory searches only those websites that are registered with that directory. Until recently, Yahoo was a web directory, but now it does have a true search engine. All the minor search engines get their results from Google, Yahoo or MNS.
