I have just been surfing the web as I do most nights reading articles relating to web design and development, including many rules on how to make your website work for you.

I find it a little strange that there are so many differing opinions out there.

Firstly I think that I should let you know. My name is Levon Gravett. I am a designer from South Africa. Being 21, I may not have the expert knowledge of some 'older' designers out there, but I feel I am up to par on most things relating to design.

After reading all the rules on how to get the best out of your website, I sat very confused. Which ones do I use? How will that work for me? So here is my take on things.

I believe the client has the first and final say in what actually happens with his/her website. As a designer, you are there to assist, comment, and suggest things that he/she may not know.

This whole argument regarding load time. I recently heard that most people will leave your site if it does not load within 4 seconds. This may be true for some people, but face it when we are actually looking for something in particular, I don't mind waiting for something to load. For example, if I am looking for a design company to design my website, I don't mind that their site takes slightly longer to load, simply because I want to see what they are capable of. If I was looking for a news article, then I feel it should load quickly. What I'm actually trying to say is that it is all relative. It depends what your target market is.

Too often, we are only half listening to what people are saying. Many times this is because we believe we know what the other person is going to say or because our mind is on something else. The results can be painful or disasterous.

We often forget the huge amounts of money and influence that politics and its bedfellows in diplomacy can make. Is it worse today than it was when commissions were paid on the Louisiana Purchase?

You are a business. You do well. Why do you need to worry about what Entertainment and Media Production companies can do for you? Why would you need to hire some weird artist to make your company’s exposure to the public more attractive? Let’s get to the bottom line. Revenue! You can actually increase your revenue through the way that you expose yourself in the media. This is not a new idea it’s just advertising.
